Nassau, The Bahamas, 9 June 2023. Higgs & Johnson commemorated its diamond anniversary by hosting a cocktail reception recently to proudly celebrate 75 years of commitment to its clients, communities and one another.
The establishment of the Firm in 1948 marked the formation of The Bahamas’ first non-family law partnership, with the coming together of pre-eminent Bahamian attorney, Hon. Godfrey W. Higgs, and his long-time friend and former Registrar-General of The Bahamas, Mr. Mervyn Johnson. Higgs & Johnson has grown since then, now boasting a legal team of 40 lawyers with a total staff complement of 107, 76% of which are women; and has expanded its reach with four offices in The Bahamas as well as memberships in leading legal networks, TerraLex and Andersen, further enhancing the services it provides to clients.
Over the past seven plus decades, Higgs & Johnson has worked together with leading Bahamian and international businesses on their most important and complex legal matters providing a full suite of corporate/commercial, dispute resolution, real estate and development and private client and wealth management services. The Firm has maintained a legacy of excellence with its practices and lawyers regularly ranked in legal directories including Chambers, IFLR1000, Legal 500 Caribbean and Who’s Who Legal.
Senior Partner, Philip C. Dunkley, K.C., in his welcome remarks, thanked the families of the founders that were in attendance including former partner, Peter Higgs, the son of the Hon. Godfrey Higgs and Diane Sturm, the daughter of Mr. Mervyn Johnson. He also recognized the attendance of Lady Johnstone, the widow of former Senior Partner, Sir Geoffrey Johnstone, who served the Firm in this role for 30 years.
Also attending the diamond anniversary cocktail, were domestic and international clients, industry partners, the Chief Justice, His Lordship Ian Winder and members of the Government including Deputy Prime Minister, The Hon. Chester Cooper and Senator The Hon. Michael Halkitis, MP, Minister of Economic Affairs.
Co-Managing Partner, Oscar N. Johnson, Jr, K.C., introduced Senator Halkitis who brought remarks on behalf of the Hon. Philip Edward Davis, KC, M.P. Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas.
The Senator praised the Firm for its ‘unwavering dedication to professionalism and the highest standards of legal practice’ and noted that ‘in emphasizing the importance of integrity, client service, collaboration and community involvement, Higgs & Johnson has made a positive impact on the lives of countless individuals and businesses.’
The MC for the evening was Sterling H. Cooke, Co-Managing Partner, who in his remarks, thanked the Firm’s loyal and supportive clients for entrusting the Firm with their legal needs as well as its former leaders, attorneys, executive team and support staff for their hard work and dedication to the Firm and its clients.
